he did 50 years ago this month after he had installed the first AP teletype to be used by this newspaper Shuman was with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company at the time He kept the copy Hearing: MORNING SENTINEL Tuesdoy January 24 1978 11 Eleon Shuman Recalls Night In 1 928 When Sentinel Teletypes Made Debut By CLAYTON LaVERDIERE Sentinel Staff It was Jan 4 1928 andii was already shaping up as a big night in the annals of the Morning Sentinel Buster Brown the expert telegrapher with the flying fingers would not be busy on this night his dot and dash keyboard was unusually quiet Instead the new Associated Press teletypes were ready for action Everyone in the Waterville newsroom watched intently as their rhythmic printing began and these news stories began to unfold Charles A Lindbergh the great who had flown across the Atlantic the year before was on a triumphant tour of South America American Marines were standing by in Nicaragua where trouble was brewing with international overtones Ruth Nichols the society girl from Rye NY had just completed the first non stop airplane flight from New York to Miami in a startling 12 hours Calvin Collidge was president Rudy Vallee was a singing sensation Harold Lloyd was the comedy star of the silent movies and Rin Tin Tin was the most popular dog in the country Eleon Shuman was there that night watching the proceedings with a touch of pride He a newpaperman but he had an important role to play nevertheless As an employee of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company Shuman had completed the installation of the new teletype machines The sight of those news stories were proof of his success Only one teletype machine was needed for the transmission of news stories The second one was a spare in the event of a breakdown But on this night both machines were kept in operation throughout And so it was that Eleon Shu man at the end of the night decided to take with him the long roll of unused news stories from the spare machine It would be a fine souvenir of a momentous occasion he thought at the time Not long ago Shuman was going through some articles at his home at 89 Western Ave and found a yellowed roll of paper It was the Associated Press copy that he had saved a half century before Shuman whose son Lyell is a veteran employee of the Morning Engraving Department thought such a find would interest the present day staff ot the Waterville based newspaper He was right 7 The elder Shuman also had the opportunity to watch news stories coming into the Sentinel newsroom via the AP teletypes processed by a new generation of editors and writers It was a visit that brought back memories of 1928 then Buster Brown was the telegraph operator Heyrauld get the stories by t)ie dot and dash method then type them up and give them to editor Jim McMahon Caleb Lewis was the general manager then and rank Manson was the editor in he recalled As an expert on teletypes Shuman spent a great at the junior high and high school levels in the near future Taggart commented that while in some cases people have experienced heart attacks without even being aware of it there is usuallv some warning of the impending condition in overnight the form of chest pain during physical exertion or the potential victim advice is simple: If middle aged or older and have been increasingly inactive as
