was not a snow job Weathermen had good reason to predict that 4 to 8 inches of snow would fall in central Maine meteorologist Tom Haw ley of the National Weather Ser vice in Gray said riday Hawley said the reason most people in the reason woke to lit tle more than a dusting of snow riday morning was a result of the storm tracking farther south than anticipated and ground temperatures being Writer SKOWHEGAN The subject of a nine hour manhunt through the woods of New Portland Thursday was arraigned riday in Skowhegan District Court Richard Joseph Vieira 27 who recently purchased a home on Chick Road in New Portland allegedly burglarized and stole four guns and other items from at least three of his neighbors before being appre hended by police hours later in a Liver more alls bar Charged with three counts of burglary three counts of theft and possession of a firearm by a felon Vieira remains at the Somerset County Jail in lieu of $100000 single surety or $50000 cash Vieira got another piece of bad news early riday morning Chick Road home he shares with his girlfriend and 9 year old child caught fire according to dispatch reports and police His girlfriend whose name was un available reported the fire at 1:57 am riday The accidental fire apparently started when the woman wrapped in a blanket tried to light a stove The blanket and then a sofa caught fire according to dispatch reports The child was not home at the time ac cording to authorities who said the fire was serious enough that the woman had to stay somewhere else for the night Somerset Chief Deputy Ronald A Moody said police first became involved in the burglaries Thursday when a person spotted a suspect later identified as Vieira coming from a house and reported it to police at about 9:30 am Deputies from two counties and state police headed to the scene where Det Thomas White of the ranklin Department spotted Vieira in a Isuzu sports utility vehicle When White tried to stop the driver at about 10 am on the New Portland Hill Road the driver pulled over and jumped from the car with the motor still running and ran for the woods according to Moody The vehicle which has since been iden tified as belonging to girlfriend was stuffed with items stolen from neigh bors a wood splitter an outboard mo tor a strong box four loaded handguns a kerosene heater Moody said At least 15 men from four law StaffWriter SIDNEY Selectman James Milligan has resigned from his post citing personal reasons Milligan whose term does not expire until next year announced his decision this week at the regular meeting of the Board of Se lectmen In a brief resignation letter Milligan wrote is with much regret that I must submit my resignation This decision is for personal reasons I do not feel that I would be able to complete my term under the new circumstances that took place at the Town It was unclear from the letter what Milli gan meant by the last sentence and at tempts to reach him Thursday and riday were unsuccessful Gloria Ripley Sid Administrative Assistant said she knows Milligan cited personal reasons for his decision but added she was not oresent for the entire meeting where he made his announcement and so could not elaborate Ripley was unsure how the vacancy on the board will be filled but said there may be an attempt to hold a special election in conjunction with the upcoming school bud get referendum Attempts to reach Selectmen David Meader and Jonathan Whitcomb were un successful riday Milligan who owns Beach on Messalonskee Lake with his wife Agnes has served on the board for two years Like the other selectmen Milligan was present at this annual town meeting March 16 Voters at that meeting took nearly eight hours to work through the 63 articles on the warrant approving an ordinance allowing recall of town officers spurning plans to change some elected positions to hired ones and rejecting a move to create a recre ation department Residents also rejected a request to raise $6270 to reimburse Ronald and Ann Gurney for legal expenses they incurred in a legal battle they fought and won with the town over regulation of signs at their small store on Route photo col lages of images and texts pro moting world peace caught the attention of noontime passers by in front of the armington Post Office on Main Street riday The Women in Black Art Pro ject consists of three ornate gar ments that are works of art de signed and created by an art col lective in Washington DC It is a feminist cultural activism pro ject for peace that does not sup port any policy or individual country or entity organizers said The costumes each have large skirts blouses with very high necks large hoods high hats and tulle veils that harken to historic mourning garb of the Mediterranean cul tures Each is heavily decorated with images poems beads em blems of peace needlepoint with feather motifs flowing slender gauze strips and in scriptions including the words of Mother Teresa: we have no peace it is because we have forgotten we belong to each oth er The half hour demonstration included about 20 peace activists who held up Women in Black posters while the three central figures performed a slow chore ographed dance to the beat of a solemn drum A number of pedestrians stopped to ask ques tions and motorists honked in support Lee Sharkey the director of
