in North America an expert says The dam like device used for catching fish and eels was located a year ago when amateur archaeol ogists found wooden stakes on the muddy bottom of Scbasticook Lake after water levels were lowered Researchers say it was the first time in Maine that wooden artifacts have been found in a perfectly preserved state Joseph Phillips of the Maine State Museum said carbon dating analysis and further research this fall confirmed that the stakes are part of an ancient fish ing weir "This is really a momentous discovery" Phillips said is the kind of important site that will bring in visiting scientists from all over the world The Sebasticook site will be internationally known" There are more than 1200 archaeological sites in Maine of substantial Indian significance but the weir marks the first time a wooden artifact has been found perfectly preserved said Dr James Peterson of the University of Maine at armington The weir belonged to Archaic Indians who hunted and trapped animals and fished on rivers lakes and oceans They were known to have a variety of stone tools such as axes chisels and hammers have all found stone tools before but no one has ever found what the tools were used on These stakes tell the other half of the story" Peterson said The stakes which carbon dating found to have existed about 150 AD were mapped a year ago Peterson
